Our WHY
More Than Swim Lessons
Swimming with Sebastian was built on a simple belief: every child deserves the opportunity to feel safe, capable, and confident in the water.
But getting there doesn’t look the same for every child.
For Sebastian, teaching swimming began long before Swimming with Sebastian became the company it is today. He started teaching swim lessons as a teenager after growing up as a competitive swimmer himself. What began as a natural extension of his love for the water quickly became something much more meaningful.
As Sebastian gained experience teaching, he began noticing something that would ultimately shape his entire approach to swim instruction: children do not learn in a straight line.
Some children are ready to jump in on day one. Others need weeks to become comfortable putting their face near the water. One swimmer may understand a skill after seeing it demonstrated once, while another may need that same skill broken into smaller pieces, taught through play, repeated in different ways, or introduced only after trust has been established.
And none of those children are learning “wrong.”
Where Our Approach Began
Sebastian’s perspective was also heavily influenced by his mother, an occupational therapist.
Through her work and their conversations over the years, Sebastian became increasingly aware of how differently children can experience movement, communication, sensory input, fear, transitions, and new environments.
He recognized an especially important gap in traditional swim instruction.
While every child needs water safety skills, neurodivergent children and children with differing physical, developmental, sensory, or communication needs may require an entirely different approach to learning them. Yet many traditional swim programs are designed around a standardized progression: complete one skill, move to the next, and expect every swimmer to progress along essentially the same path.
Sebastian knew there had to be another way.
That realization became one of the foundations of Swimming with Sebastian.
A Different Way to Learn
Over more than 15 years of teaching, Sebastian has developed a non-linear approach to swim instruction designed around the individual swimmer rather than a predetermined checklist.
We don't believe a child has to master Skill A before they are allowed to work on Skill B.
Instead, our instructors are trained to continuously assess the swimmer in front of them.
What motivates them?
What makes them uncomfortable?
How do they respond to instruction?
Do they learn through repetition? Play? Visual demonstration? Physical prompting? Games? Independence?
Are they ready to be challenged today, or do they need to spend today's lesson building trust?
Our lessons evolve around those answers.
A child might work on kicking, floating, climbing out of the pool, breath control, independent movement, and water acclimation within the same lesson—then approach those skills completely differently the following week.
Progress isn't always linear.
Sometimes progress looks like swimming farther.
Sometimes it looks like putting a face in the water for the first time.
Sometimes it is allowing an instructor to hold their hands.
Sometimes it is learning how to get safely back to the wall.
And sometimes the most important accomplishment of the day is simply choosing to get into the pool.
We meet the swimmer where they are and build from there.
Built for Children of All Abilities
Today, Swimming with Sebastian serves children throughout the greater Tampa Bay area, including both neurotypical and neurodivergent swimmers and children with a wide range of abilities and learning needs.
Our goal has never been to create one specific type of swim program for one specific type of child.
It is to create an environment where different kinds of children can learn in different kinds of ways.
That philosophy influences everything from how we structure lessons to how we train our instructors.
We prioritize trust before pressure, connection before compliance, and individualized instruction over rigid timelines.
We believe children learn more when they feel secure with the person teaching them.
And we believe water safety skills should be taught without losing sight of the child learning them.
One Mission Became a Team
As word spread throughout Tampa Bay, Sebastian found himself facing a new challenge: there was only one of him.
The demand for individualized, patient, adaptable swim instruction continued to grow, and Swimming with Sebastian began growing with it.
Today, Sebastian has built a team of instructors who share the same philosophy and commitment to working with children of all abilities.
Our team brings together backgrounds and experience that extend far beyond traditional swim instruction, including experience working with neurodivergent children, children with disabilities, behavioral support, adaptive environments, and other child-centered settings.
But becoming a Swimming with Sebastian instructor isn't simply about already knowing how to teach swimming.
Every instructor is trained in our approach.
Sebastian works directly with the team through hands-on training, observation, continued education, and ongoing mentorship so that while every instructor has their own personality and strengths, the philosophy behind the lesson remains consistent.
Pay attention to the child.
Adapt.
Build trust.
Challenge them when they're ready.
Slow down when they need it.
And never assume there is only one path to becoming a swimmer.
Our Mission
Swimming with Sebastian has grown tremendously from the lessons Sebastian first began teaching as a teenager, but the mission behind it has become even clearer.
We want to help create safer, stronger, more confident swimmers throughout Tampa Bay while helping change the idea of what swim instruction is supposed to look like.
Because children are different.
Their fears are different.
Their strengths are different.
Their bodies are different.
Their communication is different.
And the way they learn can be different, too.
Their swim lessons should be able to meet them there.
Welcome to Swimming with Sebastian.
Different swimmers. Different paths. One incredibly important goal: helping every child become safer and more confident in the water.
